Things to Do |
Things to Do We would like to encourage visitors to stay on a few days before or after a wedding to enjoy the unique facilities Northumberland has to offer. Northumberland has much to offer the visitor, although best known for Hadrian's Wall and the Roman museums the area also boasts a wealth of historic sites from other eras, including the spectacular coastal castles, other English Heritage and National Trust Sites and the living industrial museum at Beamish. Northumberland's countryside offers 60 miles of unspoilt sandy beaches, 400 sq. miles of National Parks, Europe's largest man-made lake set in Britain's largest forest offering opportunities for walking, cycling, golf, riding, fishing and sailing. Newcastle city centre, the regional capital of Northern England offers a mixture of cultural opportunities as well as sophisticated dining and nightlife. The Theatre Royal is the regional base for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Art Galleries include the Laing and the Baltic Exchange. Museums include the Hancock natural history museum and the Discovery Museum. The Quayside offers varied dining and entertainment in a newly developed riverside setting on both sides of the river, linked by the award winning millennium footbridge. Restaurants range from continental café bars to more traditional cuisine and numerous oriental restaurants concentrated in one area. The renowned Metro Centre offers one of the largest covered shopping areas in Europe, and is less than 20 minutes away. The grounds at Dissington are very peaceful and secluded and form a wildlife haven. You are very welcome to stroll on the main drive. There are four other families live within the estate so it is not permitted to stray from the metalled roads, into the woods, or to the West of the Main Hall. We ask you to please keep noise to a minimum at all times. You may be surprised at the number of different wildlife species you see; we hope you enjoy your stay amongst them!
